One of the first plants that gardeners learn to grow is tomatoes. Why? Most probably it’s because we all love to eat this vegetable-fruit, and we use it every day in our meals. Plus, it’s super healthy!
Refreshing, tasty and to be eaten without moderation, the tomato is a vegetable-fruit which plays a balancing role in the food and is full of nutritional ingredients.
Tomato might be your best choice for a vitaminized cuisine! Here are a few of its beneficial properties for the human health:
Health Benefits Of Tomatoes
Tomato owes its red color to lycopene, an ingredient that protects the cells from oxidative damage, and beta-carotene, a major antioxidant that plays a role in the prevention of many cancers and cardiovascular diseases.
- Excellent for the liver
The tomato contains traces of antitoxic elements called chlorine and sulfide. Chlorine helps improve the process of filtering waste from the body, and sulfide protects the liver from certain blockages. Also, the tomato is excellent for dissolving the bad fats and eliminating them more easily.
- Rich in vitamin C
This vegetable-fruit contains from 10 to 30 mg of vitamin C per 100g, and therefore, contributes to a better assimilation of iron and calcium.
Tomato lowers hypertension because of its high potassium content.
- Low calorie
Tomato contains about 15 kcal in 100g. Also, it contains only small amounts of carbohydrate (3%), protein (1%) and lipids (traces). Thus, it participates in a light and low-calorie diet.
Made up of 94% water, tomatoes help hydrate the body and promote the elimination of toxins.
- Control food cravings
Consumed at the beginning of a meal, 1 tomato can help you calm hunger. Also, it’s good for controlling food cravings. Rich in fiber, with a tangy flavor, it stimulates digestive secretions and promotes the assimilation of meals.
- Skin care
Thanks to the seeds, lycopene, and the rich vitamin B content, tomatoes are ideal for toning and refining a tired epidermis. This vegetable-fruit activates tanning, improves skin hydration, and delays the appearance of wrinkles. Also, due to its cleansing and purifying properties, it’s perfect for treating oily skin. And, with a regular consumption, you’ll manage to get rid of your skin problems and get a radiant complexion!
The Easiest Way To Grow Tomatoes At Home
A few months back, I discovered the easiest technique in the world for growing tomatoes. It’s so easy, that you’ll get more tomato plants with half the work than usual! Plus, you’ll be using very ripe tomatoes, which usually end up in the garbage bin.
So, if you already have overripe tomatoes at home, don’t throw them away! You can reuse them to grow new plants!
What you need for planting:
- Compost from your garden
- Potting soil
- A plastic container or a large flower pot
- A knife
- Overripe tomatoes
- Start by filling half the pot with a combination of potting soil and compost.
- Cut the tomatoes into slices, about half a centimeter thick.
- Place the slices on the potting soil.
- Take some soil and lightly cover the tomato slices. Be careful not to put too much on top. They need to be hardly covered.
- Water the pot lightly, so that the soil is moist without being soggy.
- After only 1 to 2 weeks, the seeds will begin to sprout.
Et voilà! Now you know the easiest technique in the world to grow tomatoes. Simple, is it not?
Who said that growing tomato plants was difficult?!
After 2 to 3 weeks, you will have about 50 seedlings in the pot. Do not leave them all in the same pot! Take the ones that seem to be the strongest and replant them in another pot, or in your garden.
While doing this, make sure that the tomato plants have the necessary space to grow well. Leave only 2 seedlings in one pot. No more!
If it’s your first time planting at home, be careful not to use F1 hybrid tomatoes. Why? Because they are genetically modified not to reproduce! Thus, it’s best for you to find a reliable source and use organic tomatoes!
